February 24th Stakeholder Meeting Highlights:
Stakeholder Meeting Agenda Items (Hot Topics were listed on wall, and came from the stakeholders before we started):
Communication Committee
A committee for communication problem solving was formed.
Those volunteers will be working together to come up with ways to communicate with parents more effectively.
Fundraising
Questions were raised about how we were doing with fundraising this year.
Students commented about how different student groups have taken on fundraising for a variety of student activities:
- Robotics
- Prom
- Yearbook
- Other in house events
Overall, we've had success in raising some funds for these events, and this is ALL attributed to student dedication!
Stakeholder Meeting Involvement
Concerns were expressed over lack of parent involvement.
We had about 20 people at this month's meeting.
One suggestion that was offered was to combine the meetings with student led assemblies.
Dress Code
Parents wanted to discuss the possibility of starting our new dress code early.
- One suggestion was to hold a fashion show to demonstrate the upcoming changes for fall 2010.
- Another suggestion was to have students where "I violated the dress code" T-Shirts when they violate the new expectations.
This would be to practice and prepare for Fall 2010.
Student Behavior
- Concerns were expressed on respect, cleanliness, language and how these are suffering this year.
- Ideas were put on the table as solutions:
- Advisory reviews CORE 1x per month
- Building Pride Events
- Regular visitors
- Principal Messages over the intercom at the beginning of the week for recognition, etc.
- Adopt-A-Spot from last year could be returned as a way to handle cleanliness. It worked last year.
- Student Leadership Training
- Morning Announcements and recognition
- The principal cabinet members and Laura Hilger, the Dean, offered what is already being done:
- Cleanliness Schedule that involves the entire school
- Student Tour Guide Training will soon start in advisory so that all students are eligible to give tours. This builds pride and ownership, while also teaching leadership.
- Laura Hilger also offered the idea that CORE is a community issue, and with the 42% increase in new students, it has been challenged this year. Both new and returning students have been challenging the culture; however, this is just something we have to work together on. It is not o.k. to blame one section of the population. It is all of our responsibility to practice our positive culture.
6th Grade
We discussed some concerns about this addition, but overall, the message was that stakeholders will be involved in the important upcoming decision making that needs to take place before Fall 2010.
At our next stakeholder meeting, March 31st, some example standards will be shared.
CORE Court Communication
Parents can access CORE folders from the front office on their children
If they want to hear from CORE court, they can contact the office and that can be arranged.
Some offenses are not severe enough for parent involvement, but this is reviewed on a case by case basis.
Safety/Parking Lot
- This is an issue every year
- Speed Limit sign up front like in the back
- Flow is o.k. and people have stopped leaving their cars unattended in the parking lot
Announcements
- After School Tutoring Mondays/Thursdays 2:3-4 Thursday Mornings 7:00am
- Open Houses March 3rd 6-7pm, March 17th 6-7pm, March 20th 10-2
- Feb. 27th, Martial Arts Cultural Expo, WEST 4-6
Our next regular stakeholder meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 31st at 5:30 pm
Definition for Stakeholder:
A stakeholder is someone who has a stake in the organization; someone who is connected to HTH because of his/her involvement.
HTH values ALL stakeholders (students, staff, parents, families, business partners, board members, etc.) because gaining perspective
from all of them is how we make decisions. Without stakeholders' voices, an organization cannot move forward.
Come out and get involved in HTH!
You can learn about the school, and earn volunteer hours just for attending.
Need volunteer hours? Want to help out?
Here are the steps needed:
1. Fill out the volunteer sign-up sheet Volunteer Sign-up Sheet
2. Hand in at the upcoming stakeholder meeting, or give to Jan for
delivery to Ms. Laura Hilger
3. See the volunteer opportunities link on our website,
and contact the needed teacher(s).
4. Attend the stakeholder meetings monthly and work on a committee
5. Regardless of what you do, record your volunteer hours in the
volunteer log.
At the upcoming stakeholder meeting, we will review all of the ways that you can volunteer here at HTH! See you there!
