![]() The Need for HTH The use of high technology in career fields throughout Alaska has prompted the need to create a school that prepares students for the world of work in our state, as well as the ability to choose whatever field they would like. Whether in the area of environmental and global sciences, entrepreneurship and small business, or the field of education, stay-at-home parent, high tech skills are necessary for successful choices in self-employed, public and private employment opportunities, and continuing higher education. While job demand continues to rise, industries and businesses in Alaska are facing increased difficulty finding employees who have basic workplace skills and problem-solving abilities that these companies need. Many students graduate ill-prepared for rewarding careers or for higher education. Additionally, most secondary schools are large and detached. Many students are uninterested in their courses of study and may not have the opportunities to pursue the courses of their choice. Low income and minority students face language and cultural barriers that exacerbate these conditions in traditional large school environments. Highland Tech High is reinventing the traditional urban secondary school, focusing on meeting the needs of students in a rapidly changing society and educational system. Students often perform better in small, personalized learning environments, and excel when working with technology through project-based curriculum that mirrors a workplace environment.
